The Return of the ITL!!

We are very happy to announce that the ITL (otherwise known as the Internal Team League) is returning to Reigate Squash Club this winter for a fifth season. If you are new to the club, or have never really engaged with the ITL before, the following FAQ’s may help motivate you to sign up:

What is the ITL for?

The ITL is a fun event, aimed to bring together club members of all playing abilities (squash and racketball) in a social setting.

What is the format of the ITL?

There are four teams, each with mixed ability players - Rhythm & Blues, Green Machine, Mellow Yellows and Rediculous 5. On the third Friday (normally) of every month, these teams play each other in a slightly competitive team match. Across the six months, each team plays each other twice, and the results are put into a league table. The winning team gets adulation, admiration, a virtual trophy and not much else…

What would I expect if I sign up?

You’d be nominated for a team and when you play, you’d be pitched against someone else in the club roughly your own standard. Matches are a best of five game format of squash or racketball (whatever your poison). Racketball matches are singles and doubles, squash matches are singles only. Win your match, help your team rack up points!

What is my commitment?

Over six months you can choose to play in just one fixture or all six. There is no obligation to turn out every month; if you are not available, you just say so and you won’t be selected for that month.

My playing ability is not very high; it doesn’t sound like the right kind of event for me

You are just the type of people we are looking for! The playing standard in previous years ranged from amongst the Surrey’s best players right down to social and league 13 players. You will have fun playing your own match against someone your own standard and then you can watch some fabulous, action packed squash as the top players from your team battle it out on court, inspiring you to greater heights! Try it out – it’s a lot of fun.

Sounds thirsty work…

The bar is open, drinks pour rather freely.

Won’t I get hungry?

The event is generously sponsored by our culinary partner Giggling Squid. There will be delicious curries on offer, together with side salads, a cheese board and other goodies from the kitchen.

What time would I play?

Matches start around 5pm and run through until about 9:30pm. You indicate up front when in the evening you can play. If you can only make early or late in the evening, just say so, and we’ll accommodate. If you don’t want to stay for food, that’s completely fine.

I haven’t got a thing to wear…

Most of the team members wear bespoke ITL shirts, each in the subtle colour of their team, complete with Reigate logo on the front and the person’s name, team name and the year of first participation on the back. These are available to order before the start of the season at a price of around £14. If you’d rather wear your own shirt, that’s absolutely fine, but try to wear one of your team’s colour, so the crowd knows who you are playing for.

Ah yes, money. How much will I need to cough up?

Each time you play, you will pay a match fee of just £3.30. If you want food, it will be around £10. If you like, you can buy you and your opponent a drink at the bar which you pay for.

Will I be the only one who turns up?

Last year 81 club members participated in the ITL! Typically we get around 40 people on court over the course of an evening. So you’ll be in very good company.

Can I just come and watch before signing up?

Of course. Come and watch some great squash action from your fellow club members.

It’s the fifth year you’ve run this; isn’t the format getting a bit staid?

New for 2025!!! We will be using Squash Levels rankings to handicap the matches. So if you find you are drawn against someone slightly above your standard, then you will get a points advantage. This should allow for even closer matches.

When is the first evening?

Friday 17th October. Get it in your diary now!

Sounds great! How do I sign up?

If you are new to the ITL; just respond to this message and we’ll be in touch. If you have played in the ITL before, just send a quick Whatsapp on your team’s chat to indicate you are interested in playing again this year. Let’s get even more members participating this year!
