Oxfordshire County Closed Success for Leah Beglan
Playing two draws in a single tournament is never easy but Leah entered both the Ladies A and Mixed C events, where she was seeded 3rd and 21st respectively.
After a bruising 60-minute encounter at Radley College, Leah took on the No. 12 seed in the Mixed draw. Saving two match balls and recovering from 7-2 down in the fifth game, she fought back to win 3-2. Next came a trip to Abingdon Squash Club to face the No. 5 seed. Another marathon followed, with Leah emerging victorious 12-10 in the fifth after a high-quality contest featuring some consistently tight work down the backhand wall. This was undoubtedly the biggest tournament victory of her squash career so far.
Her reward was a quarter-final against the No. 4 seed, who would eventually finish runner-up. After taking the first game, Leah continued to trade blows throughout the match but Tom ultimately prevailed 3-1 in a hard-fought encounter.
In the Ladies event, Leah faced No. 2 seed Helen Knowles and produced a superb performance to win 3-0 with some sustained power hitting. The Ladies Final was another match of real quality, with both players displaying an excellent blend of skill, speed and strength. Congratulations to top seed Caroline Hazelwood, who won 3-1 in four closely contested games (2-11, 11-9, 12-10, 11-7), played in wonderful spirit throughout.
We're told by father, Wayne, "Sometimes, as a parent, you simply feel lucky to watch one of your children move into a different league in something they love. Saturday was one of those days."
