Remembering Jo Mackereth

We are sorry to announce the death of our long-standing member, Jo Mackereth, at the age of 92. Jo had been a member since the mid-1960s and enjoyed doubles on Friday evenings with her husband, Peter, playing far into her senior years. She was a great supporter of the club, running the bar on Fridays for about 30 years and taking pride in keeping it tidy and shiny, particularly the beer taps. She was a regular at 100 Club as recently as last year and was thrilled to celebrate her 90th birthday there with a birthday cake.
The club was integral to Jo and Peter’s lives and she often recounted happy memories of the time she spent there and the friends she had made over the years. These memories continued to be a great source of joy to her.
Jo had worked as a makeup artist and was never seen without her splendid eye makeup, always perfect, even when she was on court. In fact, at one club dinner dance, Jo won the previously unannounced “Best Kept Eye Makeup on Court” award. She often wore colourful clothes, with a few sparkles too. Jo kept many chickens and various other fowl over the years, many of which roamed freely around her house and later in life, even had their own bedroom!
Jo will be remembered by those who knew her as softly spoken in her Wakefield accent, always interesting, interested in others, positive and smiling. She was a genuine and kind lady who loved people and life.
