Could You Be Our New Club Welfare & Safeguarding Officer?

As our junior section continues to grow, the club is looking for a volunteer to take on the important role of Club Welfare & Safeguarding Officer.

The club currently has a Welfare & Safeguarding Officer in place. After a number of years of dedicated service, they are looking to step back from the role and we are now seeking someone to take over and continue this important work.

We'd like to reassure interested members that this is a very manageable volunteer role. While the England Squash safeguarding pages contain a great deal of information and guidance, the responsibilities at club level are straightforward and support is readily available when needed.

The successful volunteer will not be left to figure things out alone. The current Welfare & Safeguarding Officer will be available to assist with the handover, answer questions and provide guidance during the transition. The committee and England Squash are also there to offer support whenever required.

What does the role involve?

In simple terms, you would be:

  • The first point of contact for any safeguarding or welfare concerns involving children, young people or adults at risk.
  • Helping the club maintain a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone.
  • Working with England Squash and the club committee if any concerns need to be reported or investigated.
  • Promoting good safeguarding practice throughout the club.

Importantly, the Welfare Officer is not expected to investigate concerns themselves. The role is to listen, record information appropriately and seek advice or refer matters when required.

What qualifications are needed?

The successful volunteer will need to:

  • Complete an England Squash DBS check.
  • Attend the required online safeguarding training courses.
  • Keep these qualifications up to date.

The club will help you find the correct courses and will cover the associated costs.

You won't be starting from scratch. The current Welfare & Safeguarding Officer will be available to help with the handover and answer any questions, ensuring a smooth transition into the role. The committee will also be on hand to provide ongoing support.

Who would be suitable?

  • This role could be ideal for someone who:
  • Already has a safeguarding or welfare role at another sports club.
  • Works in a school, college, youth organisation or community group.
  • Is a parent or guardian of one of our junior members.
  • Has an interest in helping create a safe and positive environment for all members.

You don't need to be an expert in safeguarding before volunteering. Training and support are provided and the role is designed to be both practical and manageable. If you're organised, approachable and willing to help the club maintain a safe environment for all members, you already have many of the qualities we're looking for.

Could the role be shared?

Absolutely. If two members would prefer to share the responsibilities, we would be very happy to explore that option. Having joint Welfare Officers could help spread the workload, provide cover when one person is unavailable and make the role even more manageable.

Interested?

If you would like an informal chat about the role or would simply like to know a little more before committing, please reply to this email. There is absolutely no obligation.

You can find more information about safeguarding on the England Squash website - https://www.englandsquash.com/safeguarding

Please don't let the volume of information put you off, the practical requirements for the club role are straightforward and we'll help you through every stage of the process.
